Coles & Bilo South Australian Food Industry Hall of Fame Award
Coopers Brewery Limited
As a proud South Australian company, Coopers Brewery is a genuine leader in the food sector. Coopers Brewery has a long rich history, which spans from its’ origins in 1862 to the present day. Through the decades the brewery has grown from strength to strength.
The company’s products are made from the finest quality malt sourced from premium South Australian barley, which of course is a great way to make a great beer.
Based at Regency Park in Adelaide, Coopers is Australia’s last remaining family owned brewery and the third largest brewery in Australia.
The judging panel were looking for a business or individual who had enhanced the reputation of South Australia by its product or service, had to have shown a long term commitment to the industry, provided benchmarks for our food industry as a whole to aspire to, be innovative in product lines and developing new markets. The winner also had to be a leader in environmental and social values.
The decision was a tough one, with so many great South Australian champions, but the judging panel believes that the inaugural winner more than fulfils the criteria.
SARDI Leadership Through Innovation Award
Kangaroo Island Abalone
Kangaroo Island Abalone has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 1995, when it chose the clean, green waters in Kangaroo Island to set up.
Since then, it has grown to be the largest abalone business in the southern hemisphere, and one of the largest five in the world. Their production capacity has doubled in size – again reflecting their innovative approach to expanding their business.
Its creative solution to an age-old problem was considered attractive to the judging panel, who believed the nitrogen frozen-product shows the company to be a true leader in the food export industry.
NFIS Limited Leadership Through New Export Development Award
Kangaroo Island Abalone
This judging panel also agreed that the company showed excellence with their new technology. Their use of nitrogen freezing made it possible for Kangaroo Island Abalone to create a higher value product into the very demanding Japanese market.
Their links and use of AUSAB marketing was considered an excellent example of how the seafood sector could work together, to benefit the industry as a whole.
They are a success story and very worthy winners of the NFIS Leadership through New Export Development Award.
Peats Soil and Garden Supplies Leadership Through Environmental Sustainability Award
B.-d. Farm Paris Creek
The judges believe the B-d Farm Paris Creek operation is an excellent example of a well-managed environmentally sustainable enterprise.
The business continues to be a leader within the food industry, and particularly in the organic sector.
B-d Farm Paris Creek’s environmental program is integrated into their overall operations, going well beyond required legislation, and an inspiration to other producers.
Dairy Farmers Leadership Through Innovative Services to the Food Industry Award
Regional Food South Australia Co-op
The judging panel believes that the Regional Food SA Co-op is a great example of working with industry to develop and expand the food sector.
The Co-op is working well to offer regional food industries advice on sales and marketing, and there is clear evidence of success with existing clients. The next phase is to expand the Co-op include all areas of SA and clientele from all parts of the food industry.
Food Training SA and FTH Skills Council Leadership Through Value Adding (Small) Award
Willabrand Australia
The judges said the winner highlights leadership across the board, particularly in the areas of manufacture, innovation and business management.
Willabrand Australia is considered an excellent example for all South Australian small businesses, particularly for those looking to succeed in the food industry.
The company’s good work is shown from its production systems, right through to excellent manufacturing processes – all of which were acknowledged by the judges who consider Willa Wauchope to be an inspiring ambassador for South Australia.
Adelaide Produce Markets Limited Leadership Through Value Adding (Medium) Award
Kangaroo Island Abalone
The judges feel this innovative company has developed world class value added products with foresight, imagination and integrity.
They displayed a real focus on exporting quality goods, and have grown to be a very dynamic South Australian leader.
San Remo Leadership Through Value Adding (Large) Award
Australian Wholefoods
The judges believe that Australian Wholefoods is a classic example of a high quality food processing business.
The company has shown consistent growth in their business over the last decade, through the development of new products across their range of key customers and absolute attention to the quality of their product.
KPMG Young Leader Award
Rosalie Hassan
There is no doubt that Rosalie is a worthy winner of the KPMG Young Leader Award. Rosalie has demonstrated leadership in the industry in particular her passion for food, and her dedication to the food lovers of South Australia stamps her as a leader in our State.
Rosalie combines a wide variety of food related activity under her “Bottega Rotolo” banner to really make a difference to the industry in South Australia, and is constantly working to expand the knowledge and skill sets of South Australia’s chefs and restaurateurs.

The Greedy Goose
This certificate is presented to John & Justine Hall in recognition of their restaurant, The Greedy Goose winning the Channel 7 series My Restaurant Rules earlier this year.
Their restaurant in Melbourne St, North Adelaide, was embraced by South Australian diners during the show, and continues to be a popular venue - long after the cameras have gone.
