Established in 1976, Kinkawooka Shellfish have undertaken substantial R&D discovering that Australia was one of the lowest mussel consuming first-world nations. Their goal was to invigorate the mussel industry through the development of a convenient, accessible and world class value-added mussel product. As a result their product, pot ready mussels have increased harvest and production of mussels from 50 tonnes in 2000 to over 450 tonnes in 2007.

Judges Comments

The judges were impressed by Kinkawooka Shellfish’s new product, Pot Ready Mussels. The product was developed through a logical, thorough and commercially driven innovation framework. The business recognised an opportunity to revive an unsophisticated and undeveloped seafood category – mussels. Kinkawooka Shellfish has integrated innovation into every tier of its business, from grow-out and harvest, through to processing, product development, marketing and sales.

The business is well positioned to accommodate increasing demand for its mussels, and through its existing business knowledge, networks and experience while successfully incorporating new ideas, human resources, business development directions and daily practices into planning and operations. This was all undertaken with a clear strategic recognition that for whole of chain sustainability in the fresh food sector, businesses and supply chain partners must innovate, and continue to innovate. The innovative approach taken by Kinkawooka Shellfish has given them a clear competitive advantage with a unique product, and has positioned the business to continue developing successfully as a result of its proven innovation culture.
